A home away from home at Harvest at Fowler
Visit any of the larger assisted care facilities in California and you are likely to come away with glossy brochures filled with styled pictures. A tour might overwhelm you with information, selling you and your family a ‘lifestyle’.
The real story is that the very best assisted care centres have one thing in common – the very best people.
What sets Harvest at Fowler apart is that we offer much of what larger facilities have, yet the unique care provided by our dedicated staff creates a feeling of family.
With only 30 apartments, our staff have the time and devotion for each and every one of our residents. Many of our staff have been here for 10 years or more and have a huge amount of experience in care giving.
“Most of the people working at Harvest at Fowler are familiar faces around town”, says Centre Administrator Alex. “They really embody that community spirit of Fowler, some have grown up here themselves and understand the importance of family connection, heritage and respecting our seniors”.
Harvest has a unique home-like atmosphere, and we also ensure there are enough services onsite to keep our community active and healthy without having to go too far. All staff are trained to care for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s, so everything at Harvest is tailored to each person’s needs, no matter what level of assistance they require.
Activities Director Loretta has been at Harvest for nearly ten years, and is always looking for new and innovative ways to keep residents connected and active.
“I secretly think I have one of the best jobs here”, admits Loretta. “I get to learn about what each resident likes and what makes them happy, and then find really great ways to incorporate those interests into our daily program”. Activities at Harvest range from watching movies and catching up on news, to bingo and social games and exercising in our beautiful garden.
When it comes to meal times, our Dietary Supervisor Isabel has all tastes covered. Our two dining rooms are social spaces to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner but we also provide room service.
“Our menus have changed a lot in the ten years I have been at Harvest”, says Isabel. “We ensure we follow the very latest in dietary advice and make sure our menus reflect the diverse cultures of our community. More recently we have focussed on using local produce for our dishes, and our residents love to learn that their favourite menu choice has come from a local farmer in Fowler”.
Care Coordinator Rosa is our longest service staff member and takes charge of our Medication Assistance program. She is supported by a part time Licensed Vocational Nurse Roberta. Both are trained to look after the particular needs of residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and bring a wealth of experience to their work every day.
“Our role is so much more than providing medication”, explains Rosa. “We provide emotional support for people who are away from their families, and may feel anxious or scared. We provide practical support too for those who need it – helping to dress, bathe and keep things organised.” Wellness reviews are conducted every month and Rosa is also involved in the activities programming to make sure residents are getting a healthy mix of exercise for the mind and body.
